3. ATTEND A POW WOW
A celebration of song, drum and dance, this ceremony
is a festival of sorts. Community members come
together to celebrate and honour the traditions of
Pow Wow including the styles of dance, the skill of the
dancers, the talent found within the drum circle and
honour the ancestors. In most cases, all are welcome
and visitors can even participate in inter-tribal dances!
There are also talented Indigenous artisans as well as
food vendors. Speaking of food, sharing a meal is the
perfect way to bring people together! Indigenous
cuisine has a deep connection to the local community.
4. VISIT THE CULTURALLY
SIGNIFICANT SITES
We’re very fortunate in Algoma to have a number of
unique destinations that have been important to local
Indigenous communities since time immemorial. They
help shape the beautiful landscape we know and love!
Spend some time exploring these sites but remember
that you are a guest here. These sites have incredible
significance to the local Indigenous communities.
Follow “Leave No Trace” principles and ensure to treat
these areas with the utmost respect.
5. STAY AT INDIGENOUS-OWNED
ACCOMMODATIONS
A fantastic way to support the local community is by
staying in Indigenous-owned hotels, accommodations
and campgrounds. Indigenous Peoples have been
living on these lands for thousands of years and
continue to extend their incredible hospitality to visitors.
Whether you enjoy a getaway to a remote hunting
lodge or a cozy inn, you’ll be well-rested for wherever
your journey takes you.
6. VISIT AN INDIGENOUS RETAILER
There are so many talented artisans that create unique
jewellery, clothing, paintings and more. See if your
destination has a shop celebrating local artisans or
visit a local trading post as they often have items from
Indigenous creators.
