SAULT STE. MARIE
Sault Ste. Marie is emerging as one of Ontario’s best
adventure towns. From mountain biking along some of
the new and ever-expanding trails in Kinsmen Park and
the Hiawatha Highlands to paddling along the St. Marys
River waterfront, the Soo has outdoor adventures for all
ages.
Originally named Baawaating, meaning " Place of the
Rapids," Sault Ste. Marie has a long history of being a
traditional gathering place, and to this day remains a
meeting place of cultures with residents and tourists
hailing from all over the world. The rapids’ incredible
fishing is another major draw to the city and contains
what Ernest Hemingway described as ‘the best rainbow
trout fishing in the world.’ The rapids’ easy access to
downtown, plus the number of expert guides available,
means you can easily partake in this truly bucket-list
experience during your visit.
The Soo is also the perfect place to relax. Visitors can
stroll along the beautiful waterfront boardwalk, watching
boats and ‘lakers’ locking through between Lake Huron
and Lake Superior. Several patios and restaurants along
the waterfront offer refreshments, as well as picturesque
views of the water. For a family activity, the boardwalk
is a send-off point to the 22.5 km Hub Trail city loop, a
walking or biking path that circles the city, passing many
great stops along the way.
Visit in the winter for some of the best cross-country
skiing in North America, plus nearby Searchmont
Resort has some of the highest vertical downhill skiing
in the area. Sault Ste. Marie’s downtown comes alive
in the winter with the beautiful Clergue Park ice-skating
rink, and there are also countless opportunities for
snowshoeing and popular fat biking throughout the city.
Major attractions include Agawa Canyon Tour Train, Miss
Marie Sault Lock Tour, Art Gallery of Algoma, Canadian
Bushplane Heritage Centre, Entomica, ErmatingerClergue National Historic Site & Discovery Centre,
Gateway Casino Sault Ste. Marie, Hiawatha Highlands,
Sault Ste. Marie Canal National Historic Site, Sault Ste.
Marie Museum, Searchmont Resort, Stokely Creek
Lodge, and the Waterfront Adventure Centre.
Visitors can also take in downtown attractions aboard
the New Big Ben Double Decker hop-on hop-off bus, a
unique way to explore the city.

camera, cross country skis or snowmobile and head
up Highway 17 North where you have the choice of tent
and trailer parks, motels, cabins and resorts. Travel to
Batchawana Bay, home to miles of sandy beaches,
picnic areas, gift shops and much more. Highway 17
North to Montreal River Harbour is prime touring country
for mid-September to mid-October when the greens of
summer transform into an explosion of spectacular fall
colours.
