Hornepayne, the geographic centre of Ontario, is nestled
between Trans Canada Highway 17 and Highway 11 in

the Canadian National Railway and the cross-Canada VIA

HEARST
In the heart of Northern Ontario, and the boreal forest,
you will find the moose capital of Canada, Hearst. Hearst
is a town within the Cochrane District. It is located on
the Mattawishkwia River, approximately 92 km west of
Kapuskasing, and 520 km east of Thunder Bay along Hwy
11. Hearst is largely defined by its forestry sector and its
entrepreneurial spirit. Hearst is a 94% French-speaking
community but remains energized by the cultural richness
meshed with Oji-Cree and Euro-Canadian heritage.

known for its outdoor recreational opportunities, including
hiking, kayaking, fishing, hunting, and snowmobiling.

choice. Hundreds of kilometres of groomed trails,
allow Hearst to remain one of the greatest snowmobile

Visit The Heritage Sawmill to learn how the forest industry
shaped the community. While planning your trip, make
sure to pack your skates, as the rink at the Claude Larose
Recreation Centre is accessible for public skating and also
an outdoor skating rink! Finally, take in a Junior A hockey
game and watch our Lumberjacks take on their rivals from
the Northern Ontario Junior A Hockey League (NOJHL).
Culturally, the Conseil des Arts de Hearst is an
organization that supports and promotes the arts
and culture in the community by offering a diversity of
artistic activities and exhibits. The Écomusée de Hearst
Ecomuseum showcases the natural & cultural history of
the area and a glimpse into the lives of pioneers.
